Memorial Day
As we wind down the Memorial Day weekend, I have found myself during the course of the 3 days reflecting back on what this holiday means. While I am gathering with my family making memories, I think about the troops who laid down their lives and did not make it back because they were making sure that we had the privilege of living a life full of freedom and independence. For this reason, it is hard for me to fathom the level of devotion and obedience these warriors took on. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for all of these who gave up everything just so we could have freedom. With this said, often times we take this for granted and forget that not only do they willingly protect us, but they do it because they love our country and are inclined to serve no matter what they must risk. Here we see an amazing observation - they chose to sign up willingly and when they took the oath, the pledge enforced them to serve and protect. The concept was not a burden, but rather an honor because they loved the U.S.A as well as the citizens that live here. But, have you ever thought about what they gave up to provide freedom? Let’s look at some examples - many left their family as well as missed out on watching their children grow up. Some lost the opportunity to celebrate holidays which meant no fellowship with loved ones. Most did not get to enjoy the luxuries of life because of their discrete assignments. Many had to sleep in less than ideal places. Numerous had to go without meals for days. These scenarios are just a few of the various sacrifices that were made because of the love they had for America and its people. Similarly, did you know that there is someone else who sacrificed His life for us – Jesus? Just like those mentioned above, Jesus also came to serve and protect. He was given the ultimate assignment which required Him to lay down His life. He provided a way for us to gain freedom from the penalty of our sins. Per Tony Evans, in this scenario, we are able to recognize that “Love is driven by sacrifice for the welfare of others.” So, when you think about Memorial Day, can you say that your love for others is similar to the service men and women who had a willingness to sacrifice or would you say your love is seen as self-seeking? However you answered, will you search the areas of your life that needs to be revised? Don’t forget that there is always hope and time to change your heart. Will you allow him to come in so you can be transformed?
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Reflection Questions
⦁ When you think about the depth of love that you have for others, do you make sacrifices on their behalf to show this love?
⦁ Does your heart reflect Christ’s love?
⦁ Do you abide in this love –in the Greek (abide- means to remain or stay, to continue to exist, persist)?
Bonus: Great song (if you are interested) - On this Memorial Day will you say “I will remember you?”
