A Little More Like Jesus

In my newsletter today, I wanted to share a story that occurred this past week with my 2 year old grandson Briggs. See, my daughter and her husband are expecting again in December. They are transitioning my grandson out of his crib into a big boy bed. The bed finally arrived at their house and my son-in-law immediately wanted to put it together. As Zach was in the process of laying out the pieces in the bedroom and started putting the frame together, he got out a screwdriver and other tools to complete the project. In the meantime, Briggs (2) is intently watching his Father’s every move and because he is in awe of his Dad, he also gets out his plastic screwdriver and puts the tip of the screwdriver into the head of the screw and starts to tighten it just like his Dad. As I watched, I sat back with a smile on my face- you know why? Because at that very moment, I was reminded how this is the perfect picture of a child who follows the Father’s lead and there is no age requirement on learning how to mirror his character. Just as Briggs imitated his earthly Father and mirrored his actions, believers should do the very same thing with their heavenly Father. We may say this is different because our earthly Father is physically present and he’s easier to mimic because we can see him. I would have to agree, but only if you are blessed to actually have a Father still on this earth. But, let’s shift gears and think about the idea of Jesus, the scenario is much the same. Just like our earthly Father, our heavenly Father is also present as well. The difference is, He will always be here and… though you may not see His physical body, we can see Him in nature, we can see Him in a baby’s face, we can feel His presence, and He can also lead, guide and direct us. How? All we have to do is seek Him in His Word, find Him in our prayers and feel Him in our time of worship. I guess what I am saying is it simple-we just have to ask Him to be with us and open our hearts. By connecting daily, the time together will transform our lives if we allow Him to make a change in us. All we have to do is follow his lead. So, after hearing this, what changes will you make to be a little more like Jesus and little less like you?”

Follow God’s example in everything you do just as a much loved child imitates his father. 2 Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave himself to God as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, for Christ’s love for you was like sweet perfume to him.

Reflection Questions:

  • Would people recognize you as a Christ follower?

  • Do you think others see you emulate His character?

  • How can you use your gifts and be a mentor to others?

Bonus: Great song (if you are interested) - do you ever say a little more like Jesus and a little “Less me”
