What is Your Strategy?

In my newsletter this week, I would like to talk about the strategies of the Superbowl. First let’s talk about the word Strategy. Google states that strategy means: “a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim.” When we watched the game Sunday night, it was evident that both teams had a plan of action to achieve aim. They executed different plays to achieve a goal and that is to score more points than the opponent. Both teams worked together for a common goal - to score the most points and win the game. As we noted with each play, there was an intentional plan and each player had a job to do which was to make a first down or score. Some players had the job of blocking, some had the job of running and one had the job of passing and calling plays as well as guiding the team. Though each player is different and has different skills, they all have one common goal which is to win the game. Much like the game of football, we see similarities in the Bible that mimics this type of strategy. In 1 Corinthians 12:12, we note that Paul discusses what the body (the team) of Christ should look like. He goes on to say that the strategies of believers, though we all have different gifts, we are to be one in Christ when working for the kingdom. Just like the players above had different positions, they all had one goal. We as Christians should have the same mindset. We are each called to accomplish a task, and with that task we must accomplish our assignment with purpose and intention. As Biblical scholar Tony Evans states: “No single person in the church is more valuable than the other. The same way that God designed the human body with each part functioning exactly as He intended, so also God has arranged each part of the body of Christ just as He wanted.” Tony continues to say: “Not every member has the same gift, the same role, or the same level of responsibility. But every member matters. Those whose ministries go on behind the scenes are vital to the health of the church.” So, knowing what is expected of us, will we play as a team with the same strategies as those who are called by Jesus to reach people for the kingdom? Will we work together to win the victory? The choice is ours!

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So, it is with the body of Christ.

Reflection Questions:

  • What is your strategy to reach people for the Kingdom?

  • Who will you enlist to be on your team to reach this goal?

  • How will you execute this play to win the victory?

Bonus: Great song (if you are interested) - when you implement a strategy and follow through, you will “See a Victory?”
