When I Lock Eyes With You
In my newsletter this week I would like to ask if you ever had a moment when you found yourself fixated on a particular thing and because of it, you had a hard time focusing. A few examples that could lead someone to have repetitive thoughts include: financial concerns, health issues or even job security. Now let’s shift a different direction - how about obsessing over a sin that we continue to engage in. You know the one that keeps us in guilt and shame and creates those repetitive thoughts? Whatever the case, some of these things can definitely consume us to the point that we can’t stop focusing on them. As a matter of fact, we can be a bit obsessive because we have locked our eyes on these things and now we are stagnant. Google states:”when people lock eyes on something, it is a very powerful level of eye contact attraction; it has the power to convey deep feelings and emotions.” The reality is these intriguing distractions can occupy not only our eyes, but also affects our hearts and minds. However, if we continue to let them to invade our lens, we will keep our focus on the wrong things that will prohibit us to thrive. So, how can we change the things we focus on? We shift our view to see things from the eternal perspective rather than the temporal? We can lock eyes with Jesus and the things that bring him honor and glory. We can choose to be more intentional with our time and choose things that we engage in that represent the kingdom rather than the world. Some people may ask- then what do I have to do to stay focused and change my mindset? I would say be strategic when planning your next venture. Pray about how Jesus will use you and ask him to show you your purpose so you can live it out for his glory. Likewise, surround yourself with people who have the same goals. Change the atmosphere you are in especially if it makes you stumble. Just remember to turn from the things that keep you bound and pray! I love what biblical scholar John Trapp says about Psalms 119 and staying focused – “the psalmist had to pray to turn his eyes away from worthless things.” Trapp goes on to say – “the eyes are so small - yet they can lead the whole person, and often lead to destruction. This is because the eyes lead the heart, the heart leads the mind, and the mind leads the whole person.” With this said, who will you focus on? Will you choose to lock eyes on Jesus (eternal) or the world (temporal). The choice is yours!
Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word.[ Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.

Reflection Questions:
What do you find yourself focusing on?
Do you ever ask Jesus to reveal the plan and purpose for your life?
How will you make sure your eyes are locked on eternal things rather than earthly things?
Will you pray like the psalmist and turn your eyes back to him?
