The Birth of Jesus
In my newsletter today, I would like to look at some specific details regarding the birth of Jesus in the Bible. First, we see it began with a highly favored and obedient mother (Mary) who loved God unconditionally. She did not resist the angel’s news when he announced that she would give birth to the Messiah. Mary was devout and followed God’s plan because she had a strong faith. Her response showed that she believed in the Holy Spirit, displayed a willing heart and demonstrated peace and humility. Next, we focus on a father (Joseph), who listened and followed the plan as well. Joseph, unlike most people remained obedient even when he could have left Mary. Instead of running, he proceeded to take her as his wife because he was dedicated to following God’s perfect plan. Similarly, we can’t ignore that fact that Joseph was also strategically chosen because of his character, faith and trust in God as well. Joseph came from the lineage that led them back to Bethlehem which aligns with the story that was prophetically revealed in the Old Testament. In order for this miraculous birth to take place according to scripture, various details had to align for people to believe that this baby was indeed the Messiah. Have you ever thought about if Joseph and Mary had not followed through with the plans? Joseph could have easily walked away, but because of his faith, he proceeded to trust God. Mary could have pushed back but she remained committed. When we look at the lives of Mary and Joseph they were quite ordinary but it was evident that they had a great love for God and His people. So my question is-what would you have done if you were in their shoes and you were asked to do something that nobody would believe? How would you have responded? Would you have been obedient? In this story there are so many lessons to learn. One in particular that I want us to see is that God picks ordinary people to do extraordinary things. However, in order to be used, our hearts must resemble those of Mary and Joseph. You may ask what does this look like. First, it takes a strong faith to persevere. Second, it takes a willingness to trust Him when He calls us to be uncomfortable. Last, we must have a love for God and His people. Though we will not be called to give birth to baby Jesus- the one who came to change the world and save all of humanity, we still have the opportunity to make a difference. So do you possess faith, willingness and love to take on the challenge when God calls you to be extraordinary?
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”
Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.”
Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
